Founded by visionary scientist M. Chandramohan, Microcore reflects his strong foundation in Microbiology and Bioprocess Engineering and his commitment to creating world-class nutraceuticals through indigenous scientific innovation. His professional journey—from industrial biotechnology at Biocon Ltd., through extensive cross-industry consulting, to the creation of Microcore—was shaped by a consistent belief: scientific knowledge acquires its greatest meaning when it can be translated into reproducible, scalable and commercially sustainable solutions that ultimately benefit society.
Chandramohan joined Biocon as a Trainee Scientist, a role that transformed his frame of reference from academic curiosity to industrial reality almost overnight. During his six years with the company, he gained extensive exposure to microbial metabolism, bioprocess engineering, strain improvement, fermentation and process development. More importantly, he learned the demanding discipline of taking a laboratory result and making it reproducible, scalable and commercially viable. It was at Biocon that he absorbed a principle that would later become central to the philosophy of Microcore Research Labs: A scientifically interesting discovery is only the starting point. The real test is whether that discovery can be translated into a reproducible, scalable and commercially sustainable solution. Two influential legands from this period left a particularly lasting impression on him. Chandramohan recalls Mr. Shri Kumar Suryanarayanan, under whom he worked in R&D, as a strategic thinker capable of connecting deep scientific understanding with the practical requirements of industrial operations. From him, Chandramohan learned that successful biotechnology requires not only scientific discovery, but also discipline, process thinking and execution. He also had the opportunity to observe Dr. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw during departmental review meetings. Her ability to move naturally between the language of science and the language of business made a lasting impression on him. He saw how scientific opportunities ultimately have to be considered in the context of practical application, market realities and commercial sustainability. These experiences gradually reshaped Chandramohan's own ambitions. He did not want to remain confined to one side of the divide between science and business. He wanted to become a scientist capable of carrying an idea through its entire journey—from hypothesis and research to validation, process development, commercialization and real-world application.
Following his experience at Biocon, Chandra Mohan embarked on an extensive consulting journey, working with more than 500 companies across a remarkably diverse range of industries, including starch processing, poultry, dairy, textiles, leather, sugar, paper, effluent treatment, enzymes, APIs and food processing. This period became a second, highly practical education. Instead of observing industrial problems solely from a laboratory perspective, he was able to see businesses from the inside—understanding their leadership structures, operational systems, technological limitations, quality challenges, management practices and commercial constraints. He witnessed firsthand how technically promising ideas could fail to become successful businesses when they were not supported by the right processes, economics, execution capabilities or market understanding. His consulting journey also gave him a broad cross-industry perspective. Problems that appeared different on the surface often shared common underlying challenges: inefficient processes, inadequate technology, poor standardization, insufficient analytical capabilities, or an inability to convert scientific knowledge into practical outcomes.
Coming from a lower-middle-class background, without the advantage of a family-business legacy or substantial institutional backing, Chandramohan chose to build his entrepreneurial future through knowledge, persistence and self-generated resources. The revenue earned through his consulting engagements became the financial foundation for his next chapter. Rather than relying on inherited wealth or infrastructure, he chose to reinvest what he had earned into creating a research-driven enterprise of his own. In 2007, he established Microcore Research Labs India Pvt. Ltd., investing his personal savings to build a research-first biotechnology enterprise. Microcore was therefore not conceived simply as a business venture. It emerged from years of accumulated scientific training, industrial exposure, consulting experience and firsthand observation of the gap between scientific potential and practical commercialization.
Under Chandramohan's leadership, Microcore developed a focused research and commercialization pathway in specialty nutraceuticals. The company's work has included indigenous development and commercialization of specialized ingredients and formulations, including Natural Egg Shell Membrane and Undenatured Collagen Type-II. Its stated objective has extended beyond manufacturing. Microcore has sought to contribute to the development of an indigenous scientific and manufacturing ecosystem, reducing dependence on imported specialty ingredients and supporting the broader localization of advanced nutraceutical technologies. Through a decade of continued research and innovation, Microcore has grown into a specialty nutraceutical enterprise built around proprietary technologies, regulatory compliance, analytical capabilities and clinical validation. The journey reflects Chandra Mohan's enduring approach to innovation: discover, validate, develop, scale and ultimately make the technology useful in the real world.
Beyond science and entrepreneurship lies another important dimension of Chandra Mohan's life: devotion and service. Chandra Mohan is a devoted follower of Palani Andavar and regards Bogar Swamigal as his Research Guru, drawing inspiration from Bogar's spirit of inquiry, discovery and pursuit of knowledge. He also holds Saint Arunagirinathar in profound reverence as a spiritual guide and source of devotional inspiration. From childhood, Chandramohan has carried an innate desire to discover something new, create value, generate resources and ultimately return those benefits to society. His approach to research is therefore not merely commercial. He views knowledge and innovation as instruments through which human beings can be served. His fundamental philosophy can be expressed simply Discover. Develop. Earn ethically. Give back. He seeks particularly to support the poor, the needy, devotees and those who require assistance. He regards his personal earnings, after fulfilling all statutory tax obligations, as a means through which he can contribute to Dhana Dharmas, devotional activities and humanitarian service. Within his family, he considers his wife's income from as Executive Director helped to have provided the fundamental financial support for running the household, allowing him greater freedom to dedicate his own resources toward research, service and the causes he considers meaningful.
Chandra Mohan is equally particular that his Dhana Dharmas and devotional activities should not be publicized for personal recognition or mileage. He believes genuine service does not require publicity. For him, the true account of one's actions, intentions and the benefit created for fellow human beings ultimately stands before Iyyan, who alone can judge its worth. This belief has shaped his approach to life: humble in achievement, modest in conduct and quiet in service. He does not regard giving as a means of establishing personal status. Rather, he sees it as a responsibility that accompanies the ability to create and earn.
Chandramohan's inspiration from Bogar Swamigal can be understood through three interconnected principles: Research to discover > Discovery to create value >Value to be returned to humanity through Dhana Dharmas. For him, devotion is therefore not limited to worship. Devotion expresses itself through research, discovery, service, compassion and the willingness to give without seeking recognition. The story of M. Chandramohan is ultimately a convergence of several journeys: the journey of a scientist, the journey of an entrepreneur, the journey of a researcher and the journey of a devotee committed to service. From the laboratories of industrial biotechnology to the challenges of hundreds of companies across different industries; from self-funded entrepreneurship to specialty nutraceutical innovation; and from scientific discovery to Dhana Dharmas, the underlying thread has remained consistent. Knowledge should create value> Value should create opportunity > And the fruits of that opportunity should, wherever possible, return to society. For Chandramohan, this is more than an entrepreneurial philosophy. It is a way of life—where science becomes discovery, discovery becomes innovation, innovation becomes value, and value becomes service.
